Junshan Yinzhen is produced on Junshan Island in the center of Dongting Lake in Yueyang, Hunan Province. It is one of China's "Top Ten Famous Teas".
It is said that the first seed of Junshan tea was sown by Ehuang and Nvying more than 4,000 years ago.
When the second emperor of the Later Tang Dynasty, Mingzong Li Siyuan, first went to court, his courtiers held a cup to brew tea for him. As soon as he poured boiling water into the cup, he saw a cloud of white mist rising into the sky, and a white crane slowly appeared. The white crane nodded to Mingzong three times, and then flew towards the blue sky. Looking into the cup again, the tea leaves in the cup all stood up in the air, like a group of spring bamboo shoots breaking through the ground. After a while, they slowly sank again, like snowflakes falling. Mingzong felt very strange and asked the courtiers why. The courtiers replied: "This is the water of the White Crane Spring (i.e. Liuyi Well) in Junshan, which is used to brew Huanglingmao (i.e. Yinzhen tea)." Mingzong was very happy and immediately issued an order to make Junshan Yinzhen a "tribute tea"
